The Windows mobile operating system is available in a number of handheld devices and point-of-sale systems. The ability to run customised inventory or point-of-sale style applications right within the barcode device opens a range of useful applications. Combined with portable printers and internet connections it is now possible to provide real-time product tracking information and immediate feedback to operating staff.

Many of the next generation of devices also contain GPS positioning modules, allowing for accurate position information to be stored with all other captured information.
